How I Learned to Love the Speedmaster

Dutch Comics Writer and Cartoonist Martin Lodewijk (Agent 327) Wearing A Speedmaster

LUM-TEC rates the watch as 100 meters of water resistance. The watch has a sapphire crystal with double AR coating, and nice looking real carbon fiber dial. I don't much like most carbon fiber dials, but this is one of the exceptions. Basically, the problem with most carbon fiber dials is that its almost 3D look hides elements on the face like hands and markers. When you can preserve high contrast, then a carbon fiber dial can look great. In this instance the hour markers and hands contrast quite well - for high performance legibility and look. LUM-TEC uses a no nonsense set of hour markers, minute markers and a full set of Arabic numerals. This makes the watch dead easy to read, and thankfully straight forward. It might have the pretty minimalism of a Panerai, but will beat it in terms of reading accuracy any day. One issue I have with the dial is the size of the hands. They just aren't quite large enough for my taste, and strict rules of watch dial proportions. Further compounding the issues it the style of hands LUM-TEC uses are outlined in black, which makes the hands look even shorter due to the fact that much of the time what you see if the white, not the black part of the hands. This doesn't effect legibility too much, but strictly speaking, the hands should be longer. I do like the splash of color on the dial with the red title of the watch.

Building the power reserve indicator into the 12 o'clock hour marker was clever. When empty, the number is unfilled like the rest of them, but as the mainspring barrel winds, it fills up with white. A small "E" for "empty" and "F" for "Full next to the hour marker help remind you of this. Being mostly black and white, the dial of the Diverscope LPR has hints of red and the line's nice internal rotating bezel.

Tutima likes vintage aviator style parts and we see them with the chronograph pushers and large crown. The screw-down crown features a nice Tutima "T" logo in relief. Inside the watch is a Swiss ETA Valjoux 7750 automatic chronograph movement with a special power reserve indicator module. While this added feature removes the day function, the date remains. The addition of the power reserve indicator makes this 7750 based watch much more desirable than other pieces with this movement.

Yema USA offers one of these Diving Chronograph watches for you to win during the month of March (ends March 31st). The specific model is this black colored Ref. YMHF0202 that is 43mm wide in steel and water resistant to 300 meters. The rotating diver's bezel has a unique guard over it near the crown while the dial is rather clean and easy to read. Inside the watch is a Japanese quartz movement that features the time, alarm, chronograph, and date. I like the silver on the dial and the blue trim in the crown and pushers. Retail price for this YEMA Diving Chrono watch is 5. You can enter for a chance to win one by following the instructions below. Plus, as an added bonus, YEMA USA has extended a 25% discount on any YEMA watch to all aBlogtoRead.com readers who enter the discount code "ablogtoread25" at checkout.

IWC-Swiss Replica Watches 2015 Boutique Collection

I was invited by Omega on behalf of the Swatch Group to visit Nivarox in what was an extremely rare tour. The idea was to see where some of Omega's most sophisticated watch movement components were produced. Unlike many watch brands that encourage watch writers to visit their manufacturers, Nivarox is a place whose doors are closed to the majority of the public. Due to the secrecy of their production techniques, I was not allowed to take pictures. While this fact sort of sucked from a reporting standpoint, I understand.

Like I said, I am confident that Renaud & Papi can tackle the watch. They have done watches with complex disc systems before. One of those is the famous Harry Winston Opus 3 by Vianney Halter that was years overdue before Renaud & Papi finally finished the project. I will be sure to get you full details on the 4N watch when it is all said and done. Until then you can fawn over the almost finished product.

Gergé Giovanna GM1 & GM3 Watches Hands-On

At 48mm wide it sits nice and big on the wrist. Why else do you think they call it the "Big Pilot?" The Miramar version has a polished gray ceramic case and dial with different colors and a little bit of a different style. It has has a green canvas style strap. If there is anything that you can say about IWC it is that a lot of attention goes into their dials and straps (or bracelets).

Limited to just 20 pieces the watch (ref. 308.QX.1110.HR.SCF11) will be offered in a 44mm wide all carbon fiber case with red tinted sapphire crystal. See the Ferrari logo as part of the chronograph subdial. The movement is the Hublot caliber 6300 column-wheel chronograph with tourbillon and power reserve. You can see the full tech specs below. Hublot considers this as a bit of a preview for a larger Ferrari watch collection from the brand that will debut at Baselworld 2012.

While I have yet to see the final versions, I like how the Pontos S fits in the Maurice Lacroix product line-up. It is a solid design that actually mixes retro and modern looks smoothly. It is like a futuristic version of a retro sport watch. The name of the watch is just Pontos S, but I think it would have been good for them to include "Dive" or "Diver" in the name - as that is essentially what it is.

The limited edition winder is totally aBlogtoRead.com branded. The logo is placed with gold foil on the top of the leatherette wrapped box, the winding house ring is in gold, there is an aBlogtoRead.com logo on the front of the watch cuff, and the cloth used on the cuff and the front of the winder is done in a special "aBlogtoRead.com" repeating pattern (that is my favorite detail).

The movement has a lot of neat features and I appreciate its bridge design. As I discussed before, in the movement are some fascinating technical innovations to make the movement more accurate as well as reliable. Those little touches make a Martin Braun movement - a Martin Braun movement. The calibre IS manually wound, but does feature a long 6 day power reserve with rear-mounted power reserve indicator... I can live with that.
